Avian Specialist Bios

Dr. Bianca Murphy was born and raised in Jupiter, Florida. She studied at Florida Atlantic University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. It was during her undergraduate studies that she took her interest in science and medicine and focused it towards animals. It was also where she developed her deep respect for those species encompassed within the avian family.

From FAU, she moved to Gainesville and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. She was fortunate to find a supportive clinic to start her career in Indian Harbor Beach, Florida and it was only after an offer to train at Medical Center for Birds in Oakley, CA that she moved to California.

Under the mentorship of Brian Speer, Brenna Fitzgerald, and Geoff Olsen, she completed an internship, residency, and achieved her goal of earning Diplomate status as an Avian Specialist. She continued to practice at Medical Center for Birds until 2020 when she moved down to southern California.

It was at this point that she began diversifying her career to include not only clinical practice, but collaboration with Harrisons to elevate the standard of avian nutrition, advancement of avian diagnostics with Moichor, and embarked on the development of an avian medicine curriculum for veterinarians and veterinary students with the Association of Avian Veterinarians.

She has contributed to peer reviewed literature and is a reviewer for the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.

In practice, her goal has always been to treat the whole patient, ensuring that our birds, big and small, can participate fully in the incredible and long lives that they have. As a colleague, she enjoys supporting other veterinarians as they advance in their practice of avian medicine. At the beginning of 2023 she accepted her first resident in avian medicine.

Outside of work, she enjoys surfing, climbing, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and exploring life with her husband, two shepherds, macaw, and tortoise.

Jonathan Stockman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine in Long Island University. He completed his veterinary training in Israel, where he also completed a clinical internship. Afterwards he completed a residency in medicine and surgery for avian and companion non-domestic pets at UC Davis, followed by a second residency in Clinical Nutrition, also at UC Davis. Later, he worked as a researcher in the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition in the UK and was clinical faculty at Colorado State University.

Dr. Ellen Dierenfeld is a comparative animal nutritionist, trained in Animal Sciences at Iowa State (BS Animal Science) and Cornell universities (Master’s and PhD with a focus on wildlife nutrition). She led the Animal Nutrition departments for the Wildlife Conservation Society (based at the Bronx Zoo) for 17 years, then migrated to head the St. Louis Zoo’s Nutrition program (2003-2008), feeding hundreds of species a variety of ingredients before joining the Research and Development and Sustainability groups at Novus International to manage the testing of their feed additive products with local livestock breeds, environmental conditions, and feedstuffs across the African continent. Still based in St. Louis, in 2022 she joined the World Wildlife Fund in a new and current role as Lead Specialist, Sustainable Feed Innovations on WWF’s Sustainable Livestock and Feed Systems team, where she continues interesting studies with insects, seaweed and reclaimed food waste as some of the sustainable solutions needed to minimize livestock’s feed impacts on our planet.
